A SHELTERED LIFE: Communal Living Offers Safe Haven

Peace At Home

Posted: December 30, 2011 at 5:44 a.m.

A woman, who is not being identified at the request of Peace at Home Family Shelter in order to ensure her safety, cooks dinner for herself and her family Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at the Peace at Home Family Shelter for victims of domestic violence. Clients of the shelter make grocery requests of food they need and the shelter does the shopping for them. Items that are stored in the pantry or refrigerator and freezer units that are left unmarked are considered "fair game" and can be used by anyone, but many women write their names on special items so they can be reserved for their family.

Editor’s Note: On any given night, shelters in Northwest Arkansas hold hundreds of our neighbors. No two people travel the same road to a shelter, but once there, they all must rest their heads in strange beds.
