The city’s fire chief retired Wednesday. He had been suspended with pay since October 19.

Duane Atha sent to the city a letter announcing his retirement, effectively immediately, through his attorney William Mayo.

The letter stated that a number of factors, including financial demands, led Atha to decide to retire instead of continued employment with the city.

The manner in which Atha’s suspension and investigation was handled undermined his effectiveness to continue as fire chief, the letter stated.

An investigation, performed by the Springdale Police Department, did not provide evidence that Atha was paid for hours he didn’t work, said Matt Durrett, chief deputy prosecutor.
