Ringing The Registers

Holiday shoppers are spending more this year and that has led to retailers hiring more part-time, seasonal help, according to an analysis of November jobs data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an employment services company based in Chicago.

Retailers added 423,500 seasonal workers in November, the most since 2007 and a 27 percent increase from last year. The number of workers added in November was double the number added in 2008.

Black Friday retail sales, the day after Thanksgiving, were up 6.6 percent over last year, and foot traffic in stores was up 5.1 percent, according to ShopperTrak, a Chicago-based research firm.
