Childhood aint what it used to be.
I think the '50s were when they started making consumers out of kids--and the programming's only gotten worse.

I don't think the types of toys sold have anything to do with what Christmas means to each individual family or child. The types of toys sold reflect a successful marketing strategy. I got G.I. Joes almost every year for Christmas as a child and it had nothing to do with what we were celebrating. It is the opinion of some that toys like "tanks, battleships and guns” offer kids playthings that help build and reflect on certain positive qualities. Toy soldiers are nothing new for Christmas gifts either. It might have something to do with the success of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Additionally, "bringing a tree in the house" is a harmless tradition that brings families togethor. Let everyone enjoy the Holidays in their own way and be merry.

Coralie,

After WWII, America became a nation of consumers, not just the little ones.

Happy Holidays,
