BUSINESSES FIND WAYS TO AVOID USING LANDFILLS FOR DISPOSAL

Tim Broughton, vice president of McKee Foods’ Gentry operation, left, and Jim Twiggs, the company’s local green team leader, were pivotal in making the facility reach zero landfill status. The maker of Little Debbie and Sunbelt snacks is recycling all but 3 percent of waste created on site. The final 3 percent is sent to a company that turns waste to energy.
Dumpster diving is not a normal activity at McKee Foods, but it helped keep the Gentry facility from sending anything to the landfi ll.
