The government's case was very thin from the beginning. I think the prosecutor is just trying to save face for the system.

Mr. Harton ignores the fact that two recent analyses of DNA samples collected at the crime scene in 1993 found none from the defendants, and samples from persons as yet unidentified.

Is he trying to make his editorial more poignant by artificially deepening the mystery, or does he not read the paper?

The state knew very well that getting these three convicted again would be next to impossible. There is the absence of physical evidence, many of the previous "experts" who testified have been discredited and various witnesses have recanted their previous testimony. Prosecutors make deals (plea agreements) all the time with persons who have commited crimes. This practice is a large part of our judicial system. I believe it was Oliver Wendell Holmes who said something along the lines of, "there is no such thing as justice, there is only the law." I do wish that whoever killed the three 8 year olds would have been captured.
