Museum Skyspace To Close Friday

— Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art announced Wednesday the Skyspace sculpture “The Way of Color” will close to the public after sunset Friday to undergo routine maintenance and address technical issues.

The site-specific work is on the Crystal Bridges Trail on the southern edge of the museum property. Made of native stone, the circular structure, which can accommodate up to 23 visitors at once, measures 16 feet in diameter and features a viewing room with benches and a 10-foot-wide ceiling oculus revealing a partial view of the sky. The experience is enhanced by a computer-driven LED lighting display, timed in accordance with sunrise and sunset, according to a museum news release.

The goal is to have the installation open again in time for the museum’s Nov. 11 public opening.

“Skyspace is a cornerstone of our sculpture trail,” said Rod Bigelow, museum deputy director. “With the upgrades, guests can look forward to an enhanced experience when it reopens.”

Depending on the maintenance schedule, the installation may open for special educational programs. Dates for these will be posted on the museum’s website, crystalbridges.org, and in the museum e-newsletter available on the website.
