State police rolling out new traffic plane

Posted: September 7, 2010 at 8:35 a.m.

— The Arkansas State Police haven't been able to catch speeders from the air since the plane they used was damaged during a landing in Conway County about a year ago.

But the agency has a new Cessna 260 that will be used for traffic enforcement once troopers finish training on the aircraft.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that troopers in the plane use a stopwatch to clock speeders and radio the speed and a vehicle description to cruisers on the ground.

State police say use of the aircraft serves as a deterrent because motorists can't tell whether it is in use.

No start date for use of the new aircraft has been set.

Why would Arkansas waste money on purchasing and maintaining an airplane in order to catch speeders. What a huge waste of time and money. I think the AR State Police can spend their resources on more important crimes than speeding.

I agree with rgreenway!
.
As soon as a competent lawyer gets a
case and wants to challenge a trooper
operated stop watch the plane for
speeding tickets will be worthless.
More waste from Beebe.
