ENTERTAINMENT NOTES: Folk festival, trio, awards fill busy artistic schedule

— Eureka Springs will host its 63rd annual Original Ozark Folk Festival from Thursday-Saturday, with Eliza Gilkyson headlining the closing show at 7 p.m. Saturday at the City Auditorium, 36 S. Main St., Eureka Springs.

Opening acts will be 3 Penny Acre and Wes Casto, winner of the 2009 folk festival singer-songwriter contest. Doors open at 6:15. Tickets are $15. Call (888) 855-7823 or visit ozarkfolkfestival.com.

Other festival highlights:

The Barefoot Ball, 6 p.m. Friday in the Barefoot Ballroom, Basin Park Hotel, 12 Spring St. Big Smith and Cletus Got Shot will perform. Tickets are $10; shoes optional.

A talent show at 6 p.m. Thursday at the auditorium will feature competition in youth (17 and under) and adult (18 and older) divisions. Admission is free.

The Back to the Ozarks Craft Show, noon-6 p.m. Friday-Saturday in Basin Spring Park, with free live music.

Singer/songwriter contest finals, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium (free admission), followed by the festival parade at 2 p.m.

Jazz trio plus sax

The Kenny Barron Trio with tenor saxophonist David Sanchez will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday in Baum WalkerHall, Walton Arts Center, 495 W. Dickson St., Fayetteville.

Rogers Odd Couple

Rogers Little Theatre will stage Neil Simon’s The OddCouple at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday and Nov. 11-13 and 2 p.m. Nov. 7 and 14 at the Victory Theater, 116 S. Second St., Rogers.

Arts awards

Gov. Mike Beebe and the ArGov. Mike Beebe and the Arkansas Arts Council will present the Governor’s ArtsAwards, recognizing outstanding contributions to the arts in Arkansas, in eight categories at a ceremony and luncheon at noon Nov. 10 at the Peabody Little Rock hotel, West Markham and Louisiana streets.

The honorees:

Lifetime Achievement Award: painter and found-object sculptor Gene Hatfield of Conway;

Arts Community Development Award: Robert Ginsburg, host of Shades of Jazz on Fayetteville public station KUAF-FM;

Arts in Education Award: Neale and Elaine Bartee of Jonesboro;

Corporate Sponsorship of the Arts Award: Crescent Hotel & Spa, Eureka Springs;

Folklife Award: Fayetteville folk duo Still on the Hill (Kelly Mulhollan and Donna Stjerna);

Individual Artist Award: self-taught painter and socalled “outsider artist” painter Virgil “Spot” Daniel of Prescott;

Patron Award: Fort Smith philanthropist Marilyn Patterson; and

Judges’ Special Recognition: David Peterson of Greenbrier, instrument builder and founder of the Arkansas Country Dance Society.

Each recipient will receive a vessel made of native Arkansas wood by Joe Doster of Harrison.

The recipients were nominated by the public and selected by an independent panel of arts professionals from around the state.
