NEWS IN BRIEF

— Greyhound to reopen

stations in 6 towns

Starting Monday, the Greyhound bus line will reopen stations in Bald Knob, Jonesboro, Marked Tree, Newport, Searcy and West Memphis, Greyhound said in news release Friday.

The restoration of service is enabled in part by a federal subsidy program called Section 5311 and administered by the state Highway and Transportation Department “for private-for-profit transportation companies,” said David Nilles, a department spokesman. “We [the state] are required to give 15 percent of a $13 million allocation for intercity [transportation] each year,” he said.

According to a Greyhound employee, who did not give her name, the stations in the towns were closed about three years ago.

During the first week of service, Greyhound is offering a $1 fare to customers traveling to and from the reopened stations, from or to any Greyhound location.
