FAYETTEVILLE

Charles C. Houghland, 77, of Fayetteville died Oct. 26, 2010, in Springdale.

He was born Sept. 12, 1933, in Hammon, Okla., to Clyde Bennett and Lillie Belle Boulware Houghland. He was a self-employed property manager and a longtime deacon of Greenland Freewill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Houghland; two sons, Charles C. Houghland Jr. of Fayetteville and Mitchel A. Shockley of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Nelson-Berna Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Greenland Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Brentwood Cemetery.

SPRINGDALE

Melvin Eugene Smith, 78, of Springdale, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, in Springdale. He was born Aug. 21, 1932, at York, Neb., the son of Robert B. and Edna Hickmon Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ricky Smith; two brothers, Delbert Smith and Lee Roy Smith; and a sister, Carolyn Rector.

He was a retired plumber for Johnson Plumbing. He was a member of Johnson Church of Christ where he served as a deacon until his death. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Oma Leta Williams Smith; two daughters, Rita Harriman and her husband, Joe, of Springdale, and Renee Basinger and her husband, Tom, of Springdale; a sister, Roberta Kincaid of Stilwell, Okla.; his mother-in-law, Dewey Keeter of Farmington; five grandchildren, Julie Marvin and her husband, Michael, Brad Harriman and his wife, Jessica, Randall Harriman and his wife, Lindsay, Cole Basinger and Hannah Basinger; five great-grandchildren, Anna Claire Marvin, Trey Marvin, Reese Harriman, Eli Harriman and Mary Ella Harriman; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at the Johnson Church of Christ, under the direction of Moore’s Chapel. Officiating will be Larry Culbreath.

Burial will be in Piney Cemetery, near Westville, Okla.

Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. today at Moore’s Chapel.

SPRINGDALE

Catheryn E. “Money” Harrison, 96, of Springdale, formerly of Atkins, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at The Maples at Har-ber Meadows Rehab Center.

She was born Oct. 31, 1913, in Atkins, the daughter of James William and Sallie Mae Boyd Matthews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Louie Harrison; two sisters, Gladys Matthews and Evelyn Britt; and a granddaughter, Jill Leigh Harrison.

She was a resident of Atkins for 89 years, before moving to Springdale in 2002 to be with her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She continued to live independently in an apartment in Springdale until Nov. 1, 2009, when she moved to The Maples because of her declining health. She took great pleasure working in her yard, planting and growing a variety of flowers. She was known in Atkins for the flowerbeds around her house. “Money” Harrison, as she was called by her grandchildren (and staff at The Maples), was a loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother, and was an independent and private person in the years she was a widow.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. James David Harrison and wife, Linda, of Springdale; sister, Lola Mae Hays of Hot Springs; three grandchildren, Joy Jeffery and husband, David, Jana Carroll and husband, Jon, and Jamie Tenison and husband, Bill; great-grandchildren, Christian Campbell and husband, Jacob, Taylor Speegle and wife, Jill, Jill Carrol, Justin Carroll, Sara Tenison and Rachel Tenison; and two nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Bobby Lane Pitts, Van Allen Tyson, Bill Tenison and Jon Carroll.

Graveside services will be held 11:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lemley Funeral Home in Atkins.

CANE HILL

Lou Ann Wheeler, 86, of Cane Hill died Oct. 24, 2010, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville.

She was born Sept. 25, 1924, in Tahlequah, Okla., to Andrew and Mary Jones Whittmore. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons, Leon Wheeler and wife, Delta, of Fayetteville, and Loren Wheeler and wife, Carolyn, of Springdale; three daughters, Leta Faye Gregory and husband, Robert, of Saint Paul, Lena Mae Bilbrey and husband, Arlen, of Prairie Grove and Lora Skelton of Cane Hill; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Brashears Funeral Home in Huntsville.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Saint Paul Bible Church. Burial will be in Brashears Cemetery.
