— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 27, 1910

The list of burglaries and attempted burglaries continues to grow. Tuesday night added to its quota. One of the boldest jobs of pilfering that has been done during the present carnival of burglaries, was accomplished at the home of Mrs. J.H. Markham, 313 Spring street, Tuesday evening about 6:30 o’clock. While the family were at supper a thief entered the house in some mysterious way, betook himself unobserved to a trunk in a bedroom adjoining the dining room, lifted from it a pocketbook containing several dollars, picked up a pocket knife on his way out, and made his way to other parts.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 27, 1960

Little Rock and county school board members sat down face-to-face in an unannounced meeting yesterday but got up two and a half hours later still unable to see eye-to-eye on merging their two districts. A source told the Democrat about the meeting today and said one proposal brought to the bargaining table was that the Little Rock board enlarge its membership to eight and give the countythree of the positions.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 27, 1985

The Board of the Economic Opportunity Agency of Pulaski County, in an emotional meeting at which members blamed politicians and state government officials for EOA problems, voted Saturday to transfer the EOA’s programs to other agencies. The meeting was confusing and some Board members wondered whether an EOA Board still existed. Curtis Sykes, the EOA Board chairman, however, said in an interview later that the board does exist.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 27, 2000

For the second consecutive week, a major manufacturer in south Arkansas has announced it will close after the first of the year. Burlington Industries Inc., of Greensboro, N.C., announced Thursday it will close its facilities in Monticello that manufacture and distribute tufted rugs for the company’s Burlington House floor accents division. The closing will idle 757 workers and eliminate Drew County’s largest employer and the plant’s $17 million annual payroll.
