HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

— As Halloween nears, opportunities abound for pumpkin hunting, candy collecting and getting your ghoulish groove on. These events and activities are focused on the family. Watch for a more expansive list in this Friday’s What’s Up! section.

Trick or Treat!

Treats on the Square - The annual Trick or Treat on the Square event returns to downtown Fayetteville from 3-5 p.m. Friday. Games, a costume contest, a pet parade and other events will take place during that time.

Goblin Parade - The annual Goblin Parade invades downtown Rogers from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Visitors can show off their costumes at various downtown businesses.

Costume Prowl - The first Spooktacular Costume Prowl begins at 2 p.m.

Sunday at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade in Rogers. Prizes will be awarded for best family costume, best group costume, best pet costume and best couple’s costume. Trick or treating starts at 4 p.m.

Other offerings include face painting, pumpkin painting and more. Registration is $10 in advance and $15 on Halloween day. Information: www.spooktacularnwa.com.

Spooktacular - The Bella Vista Public Library and the city’s POA will team up to offer a Spooktacular event from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the library.

Games, prizes, crafts and refreshments will be offered.

Trunk R Treat - Members of the First Baptist Church of Lowell will offer nearly 100,000 pieces of candy to members of the community during their ninth annual Trunk R Treat event on thechurch grounds. Candy will be distributed from the trunks of 50 seasonally decorated vehicles. The event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Eerie Events

CAT Spooktacular - Community Access Televisionis readying for its second Spooktacular, which will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the CAT office in Fayetteville.

Costume contests for all ages will take place during the event. Admission is $4.

Costume Contest - Three divisions of winners will be crowned during a costume contest that begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on the Fayetteville square. The event, sponsored jointly by the Fayetteville Farmers’ Market and SpayArkansas, will name winners in children, adult and pet costume categories. Costumed guests are asked for a $5 donation to participate. Information: 442-7472.

Halloween Story Time - Children can hear spooky stories and receive treats during a Halloween storytime session at the Fayetteville Public Library. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the library’s Walker Community Room. Costumes are encouraged. Information: 856-7170.

Howl-O-Ween - Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge will host its 15th annual Howl-OWeen party from 7 to 9 p.m.

Saturday at the refuge south of Eureka Springs. It is the only time of the year the big cats of the animal refuge are available for night viewing. A costume contest will also take place.

Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and children 3-12. Information: 253-5841.

Haunted Places

Haunted Cave - The Old Spanish Treasure Cave, on Arkansas 59 about 2 miles north of Gravette, converts into a haunted cavern in the fall. The attraction opens at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Information: 787-6508 or www.spanish-treasure-cave.com.

Nightmares Haunted House - Normally a fireplace retail outlet, the Kozy Heat building on U.S.

71 in Bentonville turns into a multiroomed haunted house during October. Hours are 7 p.m. to past 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Halloween night. Information: haunted nightmare.homestead.com.

Fast Lanes - The laser tag area of Fast Lanes Entertainment in Lowell will be converted into a haunted house Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The haunted area will be open from 6 p.m. to midnight. Information: 659-0999.

Hay rides - An all-ages thrill ride on a wagon full of hay bales takes place through Halloween at Bear Mountain Log Cabins near Eureka Springs. Rides start at dark.
