— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 25, 1910

With only one dissenting vote, that of Alderman John Tuohey, the City Council passed a resolution at a meeting last night authorizing the Police Committee to investigate the charges of inefficiency that the Gazette has brought against the Police Department. The resolution was introduced by Alderman J.H. Hollis. It stated that, in the light of charges against the police, which pointed to graft by some, it was the duty of the council to order an investigation.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 25, 1960 LONOKE - Fisticuffs erupted in the Jerry Screeton-J.T. Gunter election contest suit here today. State Senator Screeton was fined $10 and costs in a Lonoke County justice of the peace court for attacking Jim Swaim, publisher of the Lonoke Democrat, during a recess. Justice of the Peace J.S. Underhill found Screeton “guilty of assault and battery in the courtroom.” However, he said the state senator was not guilty of creating a disturbance in the courtroom.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 25, 1985 HOT SPRINGS - Arkansas cities are immune from general liability lawsuits under state law and thus have a “manageable situation,” while elsewhere “a major national crisis” has developed as a result of lawsuits against cities, Arkansas mayors, alderman and other city officials were told Thursday. During a fall conference of the Arkansas Municipal League, Don Jones, assistant to the director of the National League of Cities, urged the city officials to keep the Arkansas law that says cities and their officials are immune to general liability.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 25, 2000

A top level Little Rock School District administrator told a Pulaski County chancellor Tuesday that if a wealthy school system like Little Rock can’t improve student test scores without additional funding, it is unlikely others could. Bonnie Lesley testified in the ongoing school-funding hearing that the district’s latest state test scores remained low but improved by eight to 10 points in fourth grade thanks to curriculum changes funded by a multimillion-dollar grant.
