Our recommendations this year

— EARLY VOTING continues next week, and then, on Tuesday, November 2nd, it’s the Big Day. Here are our endorsements so far in this campaign:

It’s clear who should win the election for the open position on the state Supreme Court. It’s Karen Baker. With her record, the judge may be the clearest choice on your ballot this year.

John Boozman is our choice for U.S. Senate. The administration in Washington, D.C., needs more opposition, not more senators who would vote for its “reforms.” John Boozman is a doctor and a small business owner, which would help him when it comes to casting votes in the upcoming congress.

Somebody has got to succeed John Boozman in his congressional district, and our pick would be Steve Womack, mayor of Rogers and Republican candidate in the Third District. A military man, a businessman, and an executive in government who got the nickname No Smack Womack . . . what’s not to like?

Our choice for secretary of state isPat O’Brien. He’s earned a promotion to secretary of state, the official who coordinates the state’s elections. And elections have been Pat O’Brien’s specialty as county clerk of Pulaski County these last six years.

The whole state would benefit if voters in House District 32 re-elected Allen Kerr. A scrupulous guardian of the public purse, he’s the state representative who exposed the double-dippers in state government who were arranging things so they could collect retirement pay and their salaries at the same time.

Arkansas certainly needs more investment, which is why we suggest voting For Ballot Issue No. 2, the constitutional amendment that would repeal the now archaic cap on the interest rates of government bonds and loans-and let the Legislature change the limit to suit the all too unpredictable economic times.

We also recommend voting For Ballot Issue No. 3, which would take the handcuffs off the state when it comes to attracting business.
