On the 21st day of October 2010 at the age of 90 years, ninemonths and 21 days, SAM LASER of Little Rock, Ark. died after a career and life equaled by few.

Born in Clarksville, Ark. on Dec. 22, 1919, Sam was educated inthe public schools in Clarksville and Little Rock and graduated from Little Rock High School in 1937. After graduating from high school Sam attended Little Rock Junior College from 1937-1939 (where he was the captain of the basketball team) and then the University of Arkansas School of Law until Dec. 7, 1941, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While serving in the Navy from 1941 through December of 1945, Sam survived the sinking of the Aircraft Carrier USS Yorktown at the Battle of Midway in 1942. He was discharged in December of 1945 as a Lieutenant USNR. Not only did Sam serve with distinction during World War II, he was the recipient of medals along with three Battle Star Medals.

After discharge from the Navy, Sam returned from the war to finish his last year of law school at the University of Arkansas and in 1947 graduated with an LLB degree. While in law school, Sam was on the Academic Honor Roll, a member of the Editorial Board of the Law Review, Blue Key National Honor Society, Delta Beta Phi legal fraternity, and Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity.

After graduation, Sam was admitted to practice law in the Arkansas state courts and the federal courts and began a practice of law that lasted until he retired in 2008. Not only did Sam Laser belong to the Pulaski County, Ark., and American Bar Associations, he served as president of the Young Lawyers and on numerous Bar Association committees. Sam also taught at the Arkansas Law School, and was an honorary member of the William Overton Inn of Court. Sam was known from the time he began practice as a talented and hard working trial lawyer, and in 1952 he founded the Laser Law Firm, where he practiced until 2008 and was the senior partner in the Laser Law Firm.

Sam received many and diverse honors during his 60-plus years of practice. Worthy of exceptional note, his peers have voted him one of “The Best Lawyers in America” in a publication of that name since its inception in 1983. In 2004 Sam received the Outstanding Lawyer Award by the Arkansas Bar Association. In 2010 the Pulaski County Bar Association honored him with the Sydney McMath Award and has perennially been included in the Arkansas Times polls of best lawyers in Arkansas. To say that Sam Laser was successful in his chosen profession is a gross understatement. Sam’s friends and legal accomplishments are legion; he was loved for his ability, wit and honesty.

Sam, however, did not limit his activities to the law; he was a devoted member of the Westover Hill Presbyterian Church, and was a past Elder, past president of the Synod of Arkansas member of the church, served on church boards at the state and national levels, and had recently become a devoted member of the Dick Hardy Sunday School Class and Wednesday Men’s Bible Study Group.

Since Sam reported on board of USS Yorktown on Dec. 6, 1941, he has been devoted to the Navy and his fellow servicemen. Indeed, all of Sam’s adult life he has been a patriot who contributed to his country in combat, war and peace. After World War II, Sam was an active member of the “Yorktown Survivors,” and spoke often and well at military and patriotic gatherings throughout our nation; the last of which this year in Clinton, Ark. on Veterans Day. At 90, Sam could still make a speech that made your heart race and yourtoe tap. In 2000, Sam returned for another reunion. In 1942, as a young enlisted man while serving on board the Yorktown, he visited the island nation of Tonga; when he left, he told the people of the Tonga he would return. Sure enough, in June of 2000 he and Anne journeyed to Tonga and were guests of the king. Return he did, and he, Anne and the people of Tonga all had a grand time.

Sam’s life was filled with adventures, hard work and service, but his devotion to animals of all kinds brought him great pleasure just as it brought a better life to the dogs and horses he owned and those his contributions assisted. Long a lover of horses and a fan of racing, Sam was a past president of the 55,000 members of the Horseman’s Benevolent and Protective Association, member of the association’s National Executive Committee, chairman of the National Board of Directors, a long-time member of Humane Society, and loving “person” of Satchmo, Mabel and Ruby.

Sam was the mentor of many and the friend of many more; he loved and was loved by senators, governors, janitors, lawyers and folks on the street; he spoke at Veterans Day meetings, gatherings for friends, church and more juries than can be remembered. His courage in war, before the Bar and as a citizen will long be remembered.

Sam is survived by his wife, Anne Cockrill Laser; his children, Alvin Laser and his wife, Carolyn of Arkadelphia, Ark.; Phyllis Glaze and her husband, retired Associate Justice Tom Glaze of North Little Rock, Ark.; Mary Sue Brewer and her husband, Randy of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Beth Ann Morris and her husband, John of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Toran Hayes and her husband, Keith of Benton, Ark.; Kimberly VanHoozer and her husband, Jay of Senatobia, Miss.; Samuel York Laser of Great Falls, Mont.; and Sterling Warnock of Little Rock,Ark.

He is survived by 17 grandchildren: Brooks, Sarah, Paige, Joshua, Ashley, Katie, Matt, Madison, Tyler, Austin, Calliann, Ryan, Duncan, Kathy Anne, Samantha Jewelle, Stone and Peyton, and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 W. Markham, Little Rock on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Westover Hills Presbyterian Church on Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery, in Clarksville, Ark.

The family especially thanks Sweet Pea, Arkansas Heart Hospital and the Gentiva Home Health Care Services. BETTYE RUTH MILLS of Little Rock, died Oct. 20, 2010.

Bettye Ruth Hunt grew up in Fort Smith, Ark., one of Charles and Frida Hunt’s six children. Her maternal grandparents, Nannie Fischer and Fritz Andres; established a subdivision in FortSmith known as Andres Place, where each aunt and uncle built their home. Thus, Bettye Ruth was blessed with a childhood surrounded by a close-knit extended family. She enjoyed an active social life, establishing many friendships that lasted a lifetime. After high school graduation, with the country still in the midst of a deep depression, Bettye immediately launched a career working as a secretary. As World War II ensued, she was introduced though a blind date to the love of her life, Lt. Jack Mills. They soon married, as Jack was about to ship out to France. Following the war, Jack and Bettye moved to Champaign, Ill., so that Jack could complete his university degree. Champaign was the birthplace of their children, daughter Karen Kay and son Jack Jr. The family then moved to follow Jack’s career in book publishing, first to Lawrence, Kan., and then to Morristown, N.J. It was in Morristown that Bettye turned her love of homes and home decorating into a highly successful career in real estate sales. After Jack retired, the couple moved to Little Rock, Ark., to be with family and a newly established circle of close friends through the Pleasant Valley Country Club. Jack and Bettye doted on their grandchildren, Julia and Anna. Jack predeceased Bettye in 2005. We remember Bettye Ruth for the strong values she made clear in word and action:a commitment to education and advancement; hard work and perseverance; thoughtful planning, organization and thrift; and loyal dedication to family and friends. She is survived by brother Fred Hunt and sisters Charlene Green and Frida Helen Boyd; daughter and son-in-law Karen Mills and Joe Binter; son and daughter-inlaw Jack Jr. and Susan Lominska; and granddaughters Julia and Anna Mills. Donations in memory of Bettye Ruth Mills may be made to Baptist Health Hospice, Little Rock; Second Presbyterian Church, Little Rock; or the charity of one’s choice. BENTON - Clemmie W. White of Benton passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 23, after a short illness. Born July 3, 1917, in Hot Spring County, he was a man of tremendous generosity, warmth of spirit and great humor who seldom forgot a face or a great story about life’s important lessons. He was predeceased by his parents William C. White and Lona Eldridge White, and leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 65 years, Estelle Talliaferro White; his daughter, Deborah Lynn White of Hot Springs; his son, William, and daughterin-law, Shannon White; and granddaughters Lucy Caroline and Claire Elizabeth White of Benton; and sister-in-law Louise White of Malvern. He survived three siblings: Lawrence White, whose death preceded his by 100 years in July 1910; Norris White of Malvern, an honored veteran of World War II who died in 2005; and a sister, Dovie Finley of Poyen.

His paternal grandparents settled in Glen Rose community in Hot Spring County after arriving by wagon train in the 1880s. His father co-founded the Glen Rose School. Mr. White left high school before graduating to help support his family during the Depression, returning at age 25 to complete his diploma. He attended the Draughon School of Business. He worked for AP&L and the U.S. Stove Company, which ceased production due to the dedication of metal for the World War II effort. He worked then for Massey Bakery in Malvern which perfectly fit his lifelong love for traveling the backroads and byways of Arkansas. He co-founded with his wife a day care center that served hundreds of Benton families for over 30 years.

Mr. White joined Newbill Furniture Co. in Benton in 1949 and purchased the business in 1966, changing the name to White Furniture Company, building it into one of the state’s most celebrated fine furniture retailers. The company remains a devoted family business managed by his daughter and son.

Mr. White served his community as an alderman in the 1950s and 1960s. He was honored by the Arkansas Furniture Association as Retailer of the Year several times and was inducted into the group’s Hall of Fame in 2008. He was a mainstay of Benton’s First Baptist Church, serving in many capacities including most recently head of the usher staff, and was quick to point out to all he met that despite the growth of the congregation, “there’s still plenty of pews right up at the front waiting for you.” He co-founded the Southwest Water Association which was instrumental in bringing city water to rural areas in SalineCounty. He was on the Board of Directors of Fair Play Cemetery for over 60 years. He also served on several committees as well as the board of the Boy Scouts, the Benton Chamber of Commerce and numerous other civic organizations. He was deeply committed to the well-being of downtown Benton, to his employees and their families and to his customers. A hallmark of his generosity included trips to Hope for watermelons, to Harrison for apples, to Warren for tomatoes and throughout the state for peaches, all of which he passed out as thank yous to his customers and friends as they entered his store.

Visitation will be held at Selph Hall at First Baptist Church of Benton, 211 S. Market St., on Monday evening, Oct. 25 from 5 until 8. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Fair Play Cemetery.
