— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 23, 1910 ROGERS - The apple season has practically drawn to a close here. During this period over 130 cars of green apples have gone out of Rogers by freight and express. In addition to this over 20 cars of dried apples have been shipped out and about the same number of cars of canned apples have been sent out from the local factory. H.Y.

King of the Rogers Cold Storage Plant, has about 25 cars in storage, with several yet to come in.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 23, 1960 DES ARC - J.T. Gunter of Austin yesterday claimed victory in an Aug. 9 Democratic runoff primary after unofficially conceding 354 votes to state Sen. Jerry Screeton of Hazen, Gunter’s opponent in the runoff. After some involved arithmetic in court yesterday, Gunter’s attorneys said they had won the election contest by a 178-vote margin. They originally claimed a 532-vote edge over Screeton.

25 YEARS AGOOct. 23, 1985

Ray Scott, director of the state Human Services Department, said Tuesday that he was nearing completion on a contingency plan to transfer the programs operated by the Pulaski County Economic Opportunity Agency to other agencies by the end of the week. It was the strongest statement to date that the 20-year-old antipoverty agency might not continue operating. The EOA’s staff of about 100 employees was laid off after the agency failed Friday to meet a biweekly payroll of about $58,000.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 23, 2000

Eventually, all Pulaski County voters will stop using paper ballots in elections and will rely on computer-controlled ballot machines, the chairman of the Election Commission said last week. In a baby step in that direction, beginning today, early voters will use one of the county’s new computer-controlled voting machines. “I think the future of voting is going to be electronic,” Chairman Ron Oliver said.
