— Washington County taxpayers have an extra two days to pay their property taxes this year.

Normally, Oct. 10 is the annual deadline to pay personal property and real estate taxes. But that date falls on a Sunday and the following day is Columbus Day. Government offices will be closed Monday as a result.

Payments made at any office of the Washington County Tax Collector by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday or postmarked on or before Oct. 12 will be considered paid on time.

October marks a huge inflow of cash to the coffers of taxing entities, which include school districts, cities and counties.

“We collect in the month of October almost half of our total taxes,” Washington County Tax Collector David Ruff said.

The county expects to collect $136.4 million in personal property and real estate taxes this year. To date, the county has collected about $82.2 million and expects to collect about $54.2 million in October, according to county tax estimates.

The county tax collector’s office has set up three 24-hour drop box locations for taxpayers looking to avoid standing in line. The drop boxes can be found outside the county courthouse in Fayetteville and at the Lincoln and Springdale state revenue offices. Upon receipt of tax payments, Ruff said, the county will mail out a payment confirmation to the taxpayer.

Taxpayers can also pay with a credit card online at www.co.washington.ar.us or by calling 866-257-2055 and using county code 72.

Tax payments made after the deadline will be assessed a 10 percent penalty.
