WHAT’S THE POINT? With reluctance, Martha Shoffner is our choice for state treasurer in the Nov. 2 election.

We were as irked as anyone by state Treasurer Martha Shoffner’s arrogant response this summer to questions about her personal use of a state-owned Chevrolet Tahoe. Her initial refusal to consider that her use of this vehicle constituted a taxable benefit led her to snobbishly remark that if she is going to keep a log of her miles, “I’ll drive an 18-wheeler.” At the same time, her infamous “manservant” comment — in reference to the state trooper who escorts the governor wherever he travels — was downright dumb.
