HIGH SCHOOL BOYS: Goodwin, Bears control Hornets

— As expected, Archie Goodwin put on a show Tuesday night, but the junior standout from Sylvan Hills had plenty of company in a contest filled with offensive highlights.

Four players from each team scored 10 or more points as Sylvan Hills took a 93-73 victory over visiting Pulaski Oak Grove.

Goodwin, a 6-5 shooting guard who is ranked in the nation’s top 20 juniors by ESPN, scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half. He also had 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals in the Bears’ season-opening victory.

But the capacity crowd at the Sylvan Hills gym might have been expecting more from Goodwin, who scored 37 points in his high school debut against the Hornets last season.

“Honestly, I didn’t think I would have a game like [last year’s] tonight,” Goodwin said. “I just wanted to come out and help my team get a victory. Obviously I wanted to play hard and get my teammates involved. I wasn’t thinking about last year.”

Guard Trey Smith made four three-pointers and led the Bears with 20 points. Larry Ziegler, another guard, added 19 points and junior post player Devin Pearson scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

Oak Grove (0-2) was led by senior Tyler Jordan’s 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior A.J. Ivory added 14 points, junior Darius Jones 13 points and junior Eric Parks 10 points.

“That was two athletic teams,” Oak Grove Coach Wayne Herren said. “I take my hat off to Sylvan Hills. They’re going to be a very special ball team. I’m proud of my guys for coming into a hostile environment, competed and didn’t give up.”

Oak Grove led 18-15 with 2:15 left in the first quarter, but Sylvan Hills scored the next eight points - six of them by Ziegler - and the Bears never trailed again.

Sylvan Hills’ biggest lead was 28 points - 84-56 - with 6:49 to play.

Tuesday’s fast-pace style should have been no surprise. Herren was an assistant to Sylvan Hills Coach Kevin Davis in 2006, and both teams play a similar style.

“When we play, we always get that thing up and down the floor,” Davis said. “When you have a game that’s as fast and furious as that, you can see things that you need to improve on. It’s a starting point.” OAK GROVE (73) Ivory 5 4-7 14, Rhodes 0 0-0 0, Green 0 0-0 0, Parks 4 2-5 10, Turner 3 2-3 8, Jordan 6 2-2 15, Jones 4 3-4 13, Brown 2 0-0 5, Thomas 0 0-0 0, Tolbert 4 0-0 8, J.
