Over the next two weeks, a Republican state convention in Utah and a GOP primary in Kentucky will produce the first important verdicts on the highly publicized conservative challenge against the party’s establishment.

What these and other contests between now and the fall won’t tell us is the extent to which these internal battles affect the GOP’s midterm election chances and, beyond that, its 2012 challenge to President Barack Obama and the Democrats.
