The ball never had a chance. Ricardo Martinelli badly wanted to throw a strike, but nerves got the better of him that February afternoon on the Hogs’ diamond at Baum Stadium. It was his first appearance at his alma mater since he was elected president of Panama in 2009, and he was pumped. Too pumped, as it turned out. His warm-up tosses had been all over the place, and when it came time for his first pitch, it traveled about five feet before crashing to the ground. The crowd groaned in disappointment.
