Biologists: Lots of rain needed to clear streams
Posted: March 17, 2010 at 3:35 a.m.
Biologist Mitch Wine (left) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and John Harris of the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department’s Environmental Division look (left photo) Tuesday at the confluence of an unnamed tributary and Mountain Creek, noting muddy runoff coming from construction work on Arkansas 23 near Ozark. David Rickard (from left) of Fort Smith talks with Harris and Wine (right photo) about runoff on his property.
Mud from an embankment that collapsed under Arkansas 23 will continue to wash into the Mulberry River because there’s no way to clear all of the soil without causing more damage, biologists said Tuesday.

Sadly, the writer seems to have missed the biggest news aspect of this story: that the state is doing NOTHING to fix the problem, and that the AHTD is not accepting any responsibility for faulty engineering, planning, or remediation. Why is nothing being done at the site of the landslide to prevent additional debris and sediment from sliding down the hill and into the stream? The Mulberry is one of the state's most pristine streams, for God's sake, people! Where is the critique? Mr. Wallworth, you need to do a follow-up on this story and ask some hard questions!!!
