Doing the FLIP-FLOP

Formerly confined to casual wear, thongs now shoe even the wellheeled at formal events.

Ah, the lowly flip-flop. At least it started out that way: A simple, funny-looking rubber sandal consisting of a sole and two straps that cut a chevronlike path over the top of the foot, converging to form an anchor between the big toe and the second toe.
