PSC to investigate Entergy power pact, transmission system

The Arkansas Public Service Commission begins an investigation today into Energy Arkansas’ cost-sharing agreement with Entergy Corp. subsidiaries and the parent company’s reluctance to share its transmission grid with other electricity providers.

The cost-sharing system agreement has cost Arkansas consumers more than $4.5 billion in the past 25 years. The utility has served notice that it plans to leave the pact by 2013, but it is negotiating another agreement.

The commission wants to examine “the prudence of entering into a successor [agreement] as opposed tobecoming a stand-alone utility.”

The commission also has questions about whether the Entergy Corp. transmission system, which transports electricity throughout Entergy’s four-state service area, works to the detriment of Arkansas consumers.
