Tourism thrives despite recession, businesses report

Tourism business owners and promoters from across the state gathered in this historic mineral springs city Monday to share ideas on how to survive and even thrive in tough times.

The two-day event in the Victorian-era town featured tales of success in luring travelers vacationing closer to home as well as tips on energizing businesses and government entities to work together to promote their attractions.

“You don’t need a water park. Use what you already have,” said Jacqueline Wolven, executive director of the Eureka Springs Downtown Network.

Gov. Mike Beebe lauded the efforts of tourism business owners, citing their efforts Monday as a key reason Arkansas’ economy has performed better than other states during the recession.
