Hey Alex,
Yes, you can write a gambling loss on your taxes...keep the losing stubs. I grew up in the hot water city for the first 25 years of my life and still visit my Mom at least 6 times a year. So here's my well educated advice. Bet only one or 2 races, you can win a horse race but you can't beat the races. Eat at McClards on Albert Pike, it's the best. And finally eat breakfast at the the "Pancake House" across the street from the Arlington. The blueberry pancakes and ham steak are to die for!! Enjoy.
