Forestry Commission logs 128 fires

Posted: March 8, 2010 at 4:07 p.m.

— The Arkansas Forestry Commission said more than 3,000 acres burned in 128 wildfires over the weekend.

The commission said Monday that more than two-thirds of the state is listed at moderate risk of wildfires.

Burn bans have been put in place in Faulkner, Greene and Van Buren counties.

Forester Marc Phillips said landowners used the pleasant weather over the weekend to clear debris and burn it. He said some of the fires spread when the wind kicked up.

The agency said it needed air tankers to make 42 water drops to help put out the fires over the weekend.

An ice storm in January 2009 in northern Arkansas has left plenty of downed and hanging limbs for fuel for fires.
