The voters of Fayetteville sent a clear message to the school district in Sept. of 2009 when the 4.9 millage increase was on the ballot and defeated. The school board needs to find a way to fund this project within the financial contraints placed on them. Perhaps there is property not in use that the school district can sell. Maybe it is time to ask local businesses and benefactors for money. Asking financially strapped families to pay more in taxes will not work. In addition, Fayetteville has a large number of people who do not have children attending Fayetteville High School. The school system needs to learn how to live within its means.

The district is attempting to the same amount of construction that as attemped 3 years ago is only asking for about a third of the prior proposed mileage increase.
Anyone with a brain should be able to see what has transpired in the past 18 months. They have tightened the budget, not filled positions and frozen salaries in some areas.
It's again important to note that a single mill raises less money in Fay than it does in other districts. The cities biggest employer and land owner is the UofA and they don't pay a thing. Much of the industrial park area doesn't either. Add to that the 'wealth index' prevents any real contribution from the state.
Springdale gets about over half of their new school construction paid for by outside sources.
It's a catch 22 when you are not given a fair share of contributed tax dollars back to the community that is supposedly to wealthy to qualify for it.
A 1.7 mil increase gets you a totally revamped high school and brings another grade there. Plus it gains you a new elementary school.
Not much more blood to squeeze out of that turnip.
