Black artists gain place in collection

The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art on Wednesday announced the addition of works by black artists past and present.
Flatboat Men is an oil painting by Robert Scott Duncanson, one of the first internationally known black artists working in America. Kara Walker’s A Warm Summer Evening in 1863, created in 2008, reworks classic materials to depict historical racial tensions.
Duncanson’s piece from1865 is significant not just for its composition, but for the story behind it, Chief Curator Chris Crosman said. The artist had to overcome social and personal obstacles to find an audience for his work.
“His background is as much a part of American history as it is art history,” he said.
