Ancient pottery gets new attention at Crystal Bridges

Whether it’s intricate geometric designs, decorative painting or whimsical shapes of pigs, the pottery of Mata Ortiz, Mexico, is worth a second look.

But the history behind the coiled pots is as rich as the colors of the “ollas” themselves.

“The Mata Ortiz story is pretty amazing, when you get right down to it - the revival of an ancient technique by one fellow who stumbled onto some pots,” says Chris Crosman, chief curator of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

“‘Transforming Tradition’ provides a rare opportunity for Arkansans to see how one of the oldest artforms in the Americas was transformed into a living tradition by our neighbors in northernMexico,” Crosman adds.
