All is in readiness for the removal of the passenger and freight terminals of the Cotton Belt route from the Union passenger depot and the Iron Mountain freight depot to the new quarters in Argenta, which change is to take place Monday. The new passenger station in Argenta is a model of beauty and built to accommodate traffic for many years to come. The new freight depot is also commodious and will afford great relief from the present crowded condition in the Iron Mountain freight house.

50 YEARS AGO July 31, 1960

An attorney said yesterday that impending court decision in Little Rock and Dollarway school integration cases may have crucial effects on application of the Arkansas pupil placement law. Herschel H. Friday Jr. of Little Rock said he expects rulings in both cases to be handed down in the next few days. “We will know then whether the school boards of the two communities have to make major revision in their present policies,” added Friday, an attorney for both boards.

25 YEARS AGO July 31, 1985 JACKSONVILLE - Jacksonville city water is free of dioxin and safe to drink, Kenneth “Pat” Wilson, chairman of the Jacksonville Water Commission, announced at a press conference Tuesday. Wilson said he received word from the federal Environmental Protection Agency in Dallas at 2 p.m. Tuesday that there was no contamination in the city’s municipal wells. Roger Meacham, a spokesman for the EPA in Dallas, confirmed that agency experts “do not believe municipal and residential water wells in Jacksonville are contaminated with dioxin.” 10 YEARS AGO July 31, 2000

Both of the state’s leading health insurance programs for children in lowincome families will be named ARKids in a new application process that starts Friday. The process will make it easier for families to apply for the tax-financed coverage, the state’s Medicaid director says. At the same time, the state is reaching out - through coaches and other school employees - to attract more families to the programs, which are aimed at helping low-income families obtain health insurance through Medicaid.
