— 100 YEARS AGO July 30, 1910

As a result of a conference between the Argenta Street Commission and County Judge Joe Asher yesterday afternoon an agreement was made whereby the city, in conjunction with the county, will pave Main street from Fifth, north to 15th Street, with crushed stone. Mayor Ramsey and Judge Asher are agitating a movement among the property owners on Main street south of Fifth to Washington Avenue, and in the business district of Washington Avenue, to have this street paved with brick.

50 YEARS AGO July 30, 1960

State officials report that tax assessments in Arkansas’ 75 counties reached a record high of more than 1 1 /4 billion dollars last year. Included in the total were real and personal property assessments by both state and county tax assessors. The state assesses the public carriers and utilities for counties and school districts. The Arkansas Assessment Coordination Department said the actual total of $1,313,588,317 topped the 1958 figure by $151,207,570.

25 YEARS AGO July 30, 1985

Hearings on the pass through of Grand Gulf costs to Arkansans began Monday at the state Public Service Commission in a room filled with angry ratepayers, many of whom said they preferred an Arkansas Power & Light Co. bankruptcy to paying for the controversial nuclear plant. For nearly three hours, AP&L executives had to sit and listen as members of the public and opposing attorneys characterized the utility as an amoral company that was intent on victimizing financially strapped Arkansas ratepayers.

Little Rock Animal Services, plagued by problems in recent months, got a helping hand Saturday - about 50 pairs of them, in fact. That’s about how many city employees and their relatives gathered for a day of painting, landscaping and improvements at the animal pound. The effort, billed as the first Hands for Shelter Paws work day, “shows how city employees really care,” City Director Joan Adcock said.
