Some Arkansas growers to harvest early

— Arkansas farmers have gotten the weather they'd been hoping for and some are about to begin an early harvest that could mean better prices.

Growers were bedeviled by late cold weather and storms during the spring in the past two years. This year, storms were few and temperatures were higher, especially in June.

Soybean growers in Chicot County began harvesting last week. Many more growers of rice, corn and soybeans will be able to do the same in the coming several weeks.

University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture economist Scott Stiles says growers will benefit from the early harvest. Supplies are tight before the nation's harvest gets into full swing, so the first to get their crops to market stand to get a better price.
