— 100 YEARS AGO July 29, 1910

One hundred members of the Arkansas State Anti-Saloon League met at the headquarters of the league on the fifth floor of the Masonic Temple Tuesday and spent almost the entire day discussing steps which the league proposes to take to further the prohibition movement. It was decided to make a special effort to increase the vote at the September election against the saloon license.

50 YEARS AGO July 29, 1960

Pulaski County set a record for the size of the vote in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election, and also set another record for delay in determining the outcome of all the contests. As a result many thousands of persons had to wait a day or two before the final results of some ofthe races were tabulated. The reason? There were several. In the first place, Pulaski County placed the largest vote of any county in the state. That was an unofficial 53,363, an increase of 2,636 over the primary 2 years ago which had 50,727.

25 YEARS AGO July 29, 1985

The cutoff scores on Arkansas’ teacher test should not be lowered because of a 10 percent failure rate, a member of the committee that originally came up with the scores said Sunday. Dr. James H. Young, chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, said in a radio interview that, if anything, the cutoff scores should have been higher. “If you change the test, we are watering the test down to accommodate a group of people,” he said on North Little Rock radio station KAUL-AM 1380.

10 YEARS AGO July 29, 2000 HARRISON - State environmental officials on Friday were considering draining a city lake to help flush out toxic chemicals that have seeped into Crooked Creek, where thousands of dead fish are rotting. However, since the extent of damage to the creek is unknown, officials with the state Department of Environmental Quality were awaiting test results on water samples before making any decisions regarding Lake Harrison, which spills over into Crooked Creek near U.S. 65 and Arkansas 7.
