Communities of faith: Public invited to live recording

— The public is invited to a recording session featuring the Arkansas Gospel Mass Choir at 5 p.m. Saturday at Rogers First Church of the Nazarene, 4911 W. Pleasant Grove Road.

The choir released its first CD in September 2008 and is best known for the singles “Hold on for Life” and “I Lift My Hands.” The choir has appeared on the 2009 Trumpet Awards and Bobby Jones Gospel Hour on BET.

Saturday’s recording will include a song dedicated to the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter titled “You’re Not Alone.” This selection will include several area choirs, including the Wal-Mart Associate Choir and the Wal-Mart Unity Choir, as well as singers from ChristianLife Cathedral, Dwelling Place Ministries, Valley Harvest Ministries and Rogers First Church of the Nazarene.

Admission is free. An offering will be accepted with a percentage to be donated to the children’s shelter.

St. Scholastica has prayer retreat

FORT SMITH - Sister Diane Langford will present a retreat on contemplative prayer Aug. 27-28 at St. Scholastica Monastery’s retreat center. “Contemplative Prayer: Window to Our True Selves” will include time for prayer and inner reflection. Participants will have time to walk the monastery’s outdoor labyrinth or explore the surrounding 66 acres.

Cost is $100 and includes materials, one night’s lodging and two meals. Registration is available online at stscho. org or by calling (479) 783-1135. The center is at 1205 S. Albert Pike Ave.

Musician presents concert Aug. 14

ROGERS - John Michael Talbot, known as the Troubadour for the Lord, will lead an evening of prayer, music and meditation Aug. 14 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. The program will begin at 7 p.m. Talbot will also attend the 5 p.m. Mass and sing a Communion song.

Talbot, a Dove Award-winning musician, is the spiritual leader of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity at Little Portion Hermitage, a Catholic lay community near Berryville. In addition to his music, Talbot is an author and retreat leader. His books include The Word Is My Cloister, Reflections on St. Francis and Meditations From Solitude.
