The first meeting is set for Thursday. The meetings are geared toward answering questions. However, the two meetings in August are intended to be an opportunity to sign up residents for the residential permit parking program. Residents in the area will get one free residential parking pass for each vehicle registered to the home, according to the ordinances passed by the City Council in June that enacted the program.

The program is expected to go live Aug. 16, said Sharon Waters, Fayetteville parking and telecommunications manager.

The parking program will transition about 1,000 free public parking spaces to fee-based spots. The three public lots around the Walton Arts Center will be gated, while spaces on the streets and the lot behind the Hog Haus Brewing Co. Restaurant and Bar and other businesses will require payments via electronic pay stations positioned around the district.

The program is intended to raise money to fund a multistory parking garage on Dickson Street next to the Walton Arts Center.
