Har-Ber, Shiloh Fall In Tournament Play

— Springdale Har-Ber coach Chris Wood saw plenty of positives from his players this weekend at the National Select 7-on-7 Championships in Hoover, Ala.

Not only did the Wildcats come away with eight wins in three days, but they gained more experience and confidence together as a team, Wood said.

On Saturday morning, Har-Ber — coming out of the tournament’s losers bracket — defeated Griffin (Ga.) 31-24 and Lone Oak (Paducah, Ky.) 22-13 before being matched with tournament host Hoover, which beat the Wildcats 30-10.

Wood said Har-Ber ran into too much pressure from Hoover and couldn’t find ways to convert on offense when it needed to the most.

“Hoover got some stops on us early and we threw some picks,” Wood said. “It was our third game of the day; we were a bit tired. But that doesn’t matter, because we had opportunities and didn’t take advantage.”

Shiloh Christian, which lost its first-round tournament game Friday night, lost its second tournament game Saturday morning against Manderin Christian (Fla.) 41-35.

The Saints, who were the No. 24 seed after pool play, ended the tournament by going 2-7 overall.

“Offensively, we played a little better and it helped that we had (quarterback Kiehl Frazier) and Garrett Harper out there,” Shiloh coach Josh Floyd said. “It was pretty tough to stop people, though. We had some trouble defensively and we’re just going to have to keep improving.”

Wood said the biggest positive is seeing his players win 16 7-on-7 games in two weeks at national tournaments, something he feels the Wildcats can build on going into the start of the season next month.

“We went pretty much the whole summer of not doing much 7-on-7, and then we go to two big tournaments and win 16 games,” Wood said. “ That’s just huge. It tells me we can still compete with anyone and that our program is stronger today than ever.”
