— GOLF Carpenter leads Maumelle Classic

Little Rock’s Alex Carpenter shot a 5-under-par 67 Friday and is the leader after the first round of the Maumelle Classic at Maumelle Country Club.

Carpenter, the defending champion, leads Little Rock’s Alex Hewitt (Arkansas State), Maumelle’s Andrew Hopkins (Central Arkansas) and Jonesboro’s Austin Cook (Arkansas Razorbacks) by one stroke.

The second round begins today.

Carpenter, who plays at Abilene Christian and won the prestigious Southern Amateur last week in Birmingham, Ala., is attempting to win his fourth Arkansas major tournament. He won the War Memorial Classic and Maumelle Classic last year and has already won the War Memorial Classic this year.

Russellville’s Neal Westbrook, the 2007 champion, is 10 strokes back, while Fort Smith’s Bryon Shumate, the 2008 champion, is 11 back.

Cabot’s Todd Martin shot even-par 72 and leads the Mid-Senior Division by four strokes. Helena’s Bev Hargraves (3 under) leads the Senior Division, while Tom Williams (3 over) leads the Super Senior Division.

Lavy eliminated at North and South

Arkansas Razorbacks freshman Emma Lavy was eliminated from the 108th Women’s North and South Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, N.C.

Cydney Clanton defeated Lavy 5-and-4 in the second round of match play at Pinehurst No. 2.

Cross advances at junior world championship

Arkansas Razorbacks sophomore Caleb Cross advanced to the semifinals of the 110-meter hurdles at the IAAF World Junior Championships on Friday in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Cross won the fourth heat with a time of 13.56 seconds and was one of two Americans to advance. The semifinals are scheduled for today.

FISHING

Short, Rook remain in top 30

Mayflower’s Kevin Short is in 10th place after Day 2 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open at Lake Champlain in Plattsburg, N.Y.

Dave Wolak of Wake Forest, N.C., is the leader at 37 pounds, 15 ounces. Short is at 34-6 while Little Rock’s Scott Rook is 17th at 33-12. The field was cut to the top 30 anglers after Friday’s action.

Coaching clinic at Arkansas Tech

Arkansas Tech Coach Abby Davis will host a free recreational coaches workshop with Chris Stuart of the United States Tennis Association on Aug. 14 in Russellville.

The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. on the tennis courts at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex on the Tech campus. It will be designed for beginning tennis teachers and parent coaches who will be working with children of all ages.

Springdale, Shiloh Christian fall in Hoover

Springdale Har-Ber and Shiloh Christian were both beaten in the first round of tournament play Friday night in the National Select 7-on-7 Championships in Hoover, Ala.

Har-Ber, which finished 6-1 in pool play, was beaten 24-14 by Auburn, Ala.

Shiloh Christian, which went 2-5 in pool play, lost 36-28 to Memphis University School.

Har-Ber will continue tournament play at 8 a.m. today against Griffin, Ga.

Shiloh Christian will play at 8 a.m. today against Manderin (Fla.) Christian.

Action concludes this afternoon in the 32-team tournament.
