Second thoughts

John Elway, the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback who retired in 1999 after winning his second consecutive Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos, is ready to get back into the NFL.

Elway went golfing last month with Broncos second-year Coach Josh McDaniels and discussed ways he could be involved with the franchise again after having little contact during the latter part of Mike Shanahan’s tenure.

“I think it’s going to be just a step-by-step type thing as needed,” said Elway, who turned 50 in June. “Kind of be around them a little bit more. Do some stuff on the business side for them with sponsors and stuff, to get a little bit closer to them and slowly work into it and see what they need. If they need advice, then I’m there to give it to them - if they want my advice.”

Elway said he’s eager to stepback into pro football.

“I think that now is the time.

Last year I think would have been tough with the transition to what they were going through and so maybe now is the time to start,” Elway said. “Timing may be a lot better now in their minds than it was a while back.” French pastry

Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong characterized the meeting as “twoold guys who like to ride bikes” after French President Nicolas Sarkozy joined him at the top of the legendary Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees mountains.

Armstrong said they talked about the possibility of swapping jobs after the 17th stage of the Tour de France on Thursday.

“He could become president, I can’t become a champion,” Sarkozy said.

Armstrong said he didn’t foresee a political campaign in his future.

“I think I’m a week away from a very private life,” said Armstrong, who is competing in his final Tour.

Sarkozy praised Armstrong for contributions to cycling and overcoming cancer.“It’s a life lesson,” he said of Armstrong. “Beyond the debate, I admire the performance of the man. It’s a great thing to see a guy who has won the Tour seven times prepared to ride 35 or 40 minutes back.” Triple delight
