The citizens of De Queen, in Sevier County, have adopted a unique scheme of advertising the town and community, according to Sheriff Luther Tribble of that county, who called at the state auditor’s office yesterday and made his annual settlement with the state. He says that every passenger train which passes through De Queen is met by boys carrying baskets of peaches and these are distributed among the passengers on the trains.

50 YEARS AGO July 23, 1960

Growing trees as a crop under a voluntary program sponsored by the nation’s forest industries continues to gain in popularity across the United States. Arkansas is listed as the sixth largest tree farming state in the U.S. as of this month. The American Tree Farm System listed 53,064,185 acres in certified tree farms as of July 1 according to American Forest Products Industries.

25 YEARS AGO July 23, 1985 CROSSETT - With the help of workers brought in from other plants, Georgia-Pacific Corp. has restarted its mill here after a strike byabout 1,000 workers shut down the operation last week. “We are running the mill as of right now with salaried Georgia-Pacific employees,” David Moffatt, a company spokesman, said Monday. Moffatt said the salaried workers are from the Georgia-Pacific mill at Crossett and other locations he declined to name.

Arkansas’ Democratic congressman Saturday advised Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee to stop defying the federal government and give up his zealous defense of the way he wants the ARKids First Medicaid program run. “I don’t see why a declaration of war or a refusal to obey the law has become [Huckabee’s] solution,” said U.S. Rep. Vic Snyder, a Democrat from LittleRock. Huckabee on Friday promised to test President Clinton. The governor, through a spokesman said he wants to see whether Clinton would yank federal dollars for ARKids if the state continues to allow low-income parents to choose between two health coverage plans: the ARKids version of Medicaid and the more generous general Medicaid.
