NORTHWEST ARKANSAS — You don’t have to be a super athlete. ... The only requirement we have is that you want to have fun.”
So says Bryan Ellithorpe, owner and founder of the Northwest Arkansas Kickball League, a recreational organization for adults now entering its third season.
Games are played on Sundays on the fields at J.B. Hunt Park in Springdale, using an 8.5-inch red kickball, the basic rules of softball and a lot of youthful unabashedness.
“The bottom line is, we’re a whole bunch of adults playing a kids’ game, so we want to keep it fun,” Ellithorpe says.
Last season, 30 teams participated - with names like Saved By The Balls, RedBalls & Vodka and The Viking Kittens. Ellithorpe anticipates even more teams signing up for this season.
Teams must have a minimum of nine players (all 18 and older) and a maximum of 14 in the kicking lineup, he said, “but you can have as many people on the roster as you want” hangingout, cheering and heckling.
Registration is $300 per team and, this year, a donation of some supplies to the Springdale Animal Shelter.
The deadline to register a team is July 30.
