Races Develop In Three School Districts

GREENLAND TO ELECT NEW SCHOOL BOARD

— Contested races for seats on school boards in Springdale, Prairie Grove and Greenland developed midway in the weeklong filing period.

Filing for school board seats in Washington County’s eight school districts ends at noon Friday.

In Springdale, incumbent Mike Luttrell is seeking re-election to the at-large Position 1 on the board. He will be challenged by newcomer Edge Nowlin.

No candidates, including incumbent Danny Dotson, have filed yet for the Zone 5 seat on the Springdale School Board.

A race also developed for Position 5 on the Prairie Grove School Board where incumbent Beth Everett is opposed by William Dick. Both are seeking election to a five-year term.

Dick currently holds the Position 2 seat on the Prairie Grove board. His three-year term in that seat expires this year.

Greenland school patrons will elect a new school board this year after the district was removed from the state’s fiscal distress list for recurring financial problems. The district was taken over by the Arkansas Department of Education and the Arkansas State Board of Education two years ago. Local control of the district will be returned later this year when a new school board is seated.

Lonnie Meadows and Paula Schoonover will square off for the Zone 2 seat and a five-year term on the new Greenland board.

Todd Bohannan filed to run for the Zone 1 seat and James Miller filed for the Zone 3 seat. Miller was on the former board when it was dissolved.

In Greenland Zone 5, Dennis Caudle, another former member of the school board, filed for his old seat, while Terry L. Reed filed for the Zone 6 seat she held on the old board.

No one has filed for the Zones 4 and 7 seats on the school board. Zone 4 is an area south of Greenland and Zone 7 is in Winslow.

The Washington County Election Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday to draw for ballot positions for the contested races.

The annual school elections are Sept. 21.
