CHICAGO — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. could open a third store in Chicago.
Mayor Richard Daley on Thursday asked aldermen to approve a third store on the city's South Side, and the matter was due before a committee on Friday.
The retail giant has said it wants to open stores across the city, but bringing Wal-Mart stores to Chicago has been controversial.
Stores have faced labor opposition and criticism about long-term effects for communities.
Daley says the stores create much-needed jobs and have positive rippling effects on neighborhoods.
Daley says the third store doesn't require City Council approval but he'd like their support.
There's currently a Wal-Mart on the city's northwest side. The council has approved a second store on the South Side to open in 2012.
