State accredited in handling crises

— Arkansas’ emergency management program is now nationally accredited.

The state joins 22 other states and jurisdictions in achieving the Emergency Management Accreditation Program’s recognition.

“Responding to emergencies is a statewide effort, and this accreditation stands as a testament to our thorough preparation and readiness in Arkansas,” Gov. Mike Beebe said in a news release.

“While our leaders at the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management take the lead on this program, they will be the first to tell you that it takes committed cooperation from all our state and local agencies to be fully prepared,” he added.

The national program offers a voluntary accreditation process for state, territorial and local government programs that coordinate preparedness and response activities for disasters, from wildlife to terrorist acts.
