NATIONAL LEAGUE: Reds benefit from changed call, but not Wood

— The Cincinnati Reds took advantage of a rare overturned call by the umpires to earn an 8-6 victory over the New York Mets on Monday night.

Drew Stubbs and Corky Miller each drove in two runs and rookie pitcher Travis Wood of Bryant hit a run-scoring triple during a strange six-run fifth inning.

Wood, who was supposed to start tonight, made his second major league start when Aaron Harang (lower back pain) was scratched about 30 minutes before the first pitch.

He gave up 5 runs (3 earned), 6 hits and 2 walks, struck out 5 and threw 97 pitches in 4 2 /3 innings and got a no-decision again. Wood allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 7 innings in his major league debut Thursday against the Chicago Cubs.

In the fifth inning with the score 1-1, the Mets’ Mike Pelfrey walked the bases loaded. An inside pitch then appeared to graze the Reds’ Scott Rolen, who had checked his swing and started toward first base. Plate umpire Jerry Meals called him out on strikes, indicating a foul tip.

Rolen and Manager Dusty Baker argued the call. The four-man umpire crew discussed it and sent Rolen to first, bringing home the go-ahead run and prompting Mets Manager Jerry Manuel to argue. It took umpire Dan Iassogna only a couple of seconds listening to eject Manuel from the game.

PHILLIES 3, BRAVES 1

Roy Halladay (10-7) pitched his major league-best seventh complete game this season and Greg Dobbs hit a two-run home run as host Philadelphia beat Atlanta. Halladay allowed five hits and struck out seven to record his second consecutive complete game. The All-Star right-hander outdueled DerekLowe (9-7) and needed just 93 pitches to finish. Lowe allowed 2 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings, striking out 6. Lowe was cruising until Jayson Werth hit a one-out single in the sixth. Dobbs hit the next pitch into the seats in right-center for his second home run and a 2-1 lead. Dobbs used to be a top pinch hitter for Philadelphia, but was outrighted to Class AAA last month because he’s struggled in that role. He was brought up when Chase Utley and Placido Polanco went on the disabled list last week and is 6 for 18 in the past four games. Chipper Jones gave the Braves a 1-0 lead in the first when he hit the first pitch he saw from Halladay into the seats in left-center for his sixth home run.

CUBS 9, DIAMONDBACKS 4

Starlin Castro and Geovany Soto drove in two runs each, Tom Gorzelanny (3-5) worked around six walks in five innings and Chicago struck out 12 in beating host Arizona for its sixth victory in 17 games. The Cubs’ Kosuke Fukudome broke a 1-for-10 slump by leading off the game with a home run, Alfonzo Soriano notched his 800th career RBI with a home run in the eighth and Gorzelanny repeatedly worked out of jams for his first victory since May 19. The left-hander got out of a bases-loaded spot in the first by striking out Adam LaRoche after 2 two-out walks. In the third, Gorzelanny walked the bases loaded with no outs, but allowed just one run on Miguel Montero’s sacrifice fly. LaRoche hit a home run and Kelly Johnson had two RBI for Arizona, 1-3 under interim manager Kirk Gibson.

GIANTS 6, BREWERS 1

Aubrey Huff, who was in a 3-for-17 slump with runners in scoring position, hit a two-run single after an error by Milwaukee shortstop Alcides Escobar to help visiting San Francisco win for the second time in 10 games.

MARLINS 6, DODGERS 5

Wes Helms hit a bases-loaded, two-run single in the three-run third inning as Florida beat host Los Angeles.

American League TIGERS 12, ORIOLES 9 Brandon Inge had four RBI and Carlos Guillen had three RBI as host Detroit beat Baltimore. Inge, Guillen and Johnny Damon each had three of Detroit’s 17 hits.

WHITE SOX 9, ANGELS 2 Gavin Floyd (4-7) gave up 1 run and 5 hits in 7 innings as host Chicago beat Los Angeles and Scott Kazmir (7-8), who lost his third consecutive start. He gave up seven runs on six hits.

RAYS 6, RED SOX 5 Jason Bartlett’s sacrifice fly in the seventh broke a tie as host Tampa Bay beat Boston.

INDIANS 9, RANGERS 3 Matt LaPorta hit a two-run home run and Jayson Nix hit two home runs, including a two-run shot, as Cleveland beat host Texas.
