FAYETTEVILLE - Donald L. Grimes of Fayetteville peacefully passed away on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at Washington Regional Medical Center.

Born in Leedey, Okla., on July 31, 1932, to Paschal and Lillian Grimes, Don grew up in Clinton, Okla. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, Don graduated from Lindenwood College with degrees in speech and drama and history and government. He was also a 1961 graduate of the University of Kansas with an M.A. in public administration.

Don met his former wife, Patricia “Patti” McGuire, at the University of Kansas. They married in 1960 and were married for 43years. He held the position of City Manager in the cities of Emporia, Va., El Reno, Okla., and McAlester, Okla.

He then served as City Manager of Fayetteville from 1972-87, where theyraised three children. Don felt tremendous pride in the beautiful City of Fayetteville and in his role in its development. He was extremely honored to have had the opportunity to work with city leaders on the downtown Square, Drake Field, NWA Mall and downtown Hilton projects. During his last years, he cherished his regular visits to Fayetteville’s Farmers Market, where he cheerfully met patrons with offers of Tootsie Rolls. For many years, his best times were spent on Beaver Lake with family and friends participating in his favorite pastime, bass fishing.

Don is survived by his daughter, Tana Dawson of Fayetteville and her children Rebecca, Rosa, and Kathryn Marinoni; his daughter, Andrea Grimes Woods of Conway, her husband Jeff, and their children Cullen and Abby Woods; he is preceded in death by his son, Rodney Scott Grimes. He is also survived by his former wife, Patti McGuire; his brother, Charles Cullen Grimes and wife Anne of Southport, Maine; his brother, Robert Paschal Grimes of Huntsville, Ala.; his sister, Marjorie Ruggles and husband Edgar of Tulsa, Okla.; and hisfond mother-in-law, Frances Kathryn Orr of Plattsburg, Mo.

Don considered himself to have had a tremendously blessed life. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease approximately a year before his death. He dearly loved and appreciated every person who ever crossed his path, and he remained cheerful and happy until the end of his life. He truly enjoyed every minute, smiling and telling jokes to family, friends and strangers alike. He was extremely grateful and content with the care provided by Washington Regional Senior Health Center and The Gardens at Arkanshire during his last year and by Washington Regional Medical Center Hospital during his last few days. He truly celebrated his life each day, as those who loved and respected him will do from now on.

Family and friends are invited to drop by and visit with the family at the home of Tana Dawson between the hours of 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 1 at 1947, Hartford Drive in Fayetteville.

A memorial service will be held at University Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2300 S.E. 28th Street, Bentonville, Ark. 72712.
