Federal stimulus money has proved crucial as Prairie Grove and Siloam Springs build sewer plants that have been on municipal to-do lists for years.

Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Prairie Grovewas awarded $4.8 million in grants and loans, while Siloam Springs got $4 million in principal forgiveness bonds.

Prairie Grove recently hired a contractor to build its $9.4 million plant. Siloam Springs, meanwhile, is about to finish its $24 million facility. The stimulus money also covered a cost overrun, preventing Siloam Springs from having to issue more bonds and saddle customers with a new rate hike.

Both towns are racing the clock, too.
