Decatur Moving Toward New Superintendent

Decatur School District Superintendent LeRoy Ortman is more than ready to surrender his seat.

“I’m 72 years old,” Ortman laughed. “How long am I going to live?”

Ortman, who was appointed superintendent by the State Board of Education in August 2008 after the Decatur district was placed on the fiscal distress list, said he was looking forward to the Sept. 21 school board election.

The state dissolved the Decatur School Board in 2008, when a June audit found the district operating at a $600,000 deficit. In September, Decatur voters will elect board members to all five positions at once. The district is no longer on the fiscal distress list.
