Johnson named as Doak Walker Award candidate

Arkansas running back Dennis Johnson has been named a candidate for the Doak Walker Award, it was announced Wednesday by the PricewaterhouseCoopers SMU Athletic Forum. The award is given annually to the nation’s premier collegiate football running back.

Johnson returns for the Razorbacks after gaining 369 rushing yards on 57 carries in 2009. He rushed for 107 yards on 14 tries at Florida last season. The Texarkana, Ark., native averaged 111.1 yards of total offense per game, playing in all 13 contests last season.

The Doak Walker Award was created in 1989 to recognize the nation's premier running back for his accomplishments on the field, achievement in the classroom and citizenship in the community. It is the only major collegiate football award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
